Advanced Yoga Teacher Training.

Yoga Graduate School.

Trainings can be applied to a 500-hour advanced certification.

Enrollment for Module 3 is now open

Our advanced teacher training program is designed to further your education and build your expertise after you have been certified.

All of our trainings support a specific need we see in our yoga students. Students look to yoga for daily support in things like, learning to rest and let go of negative or obsessive thinking, chronic illness and pain management.

All of our trainings also teach you a new skillset within the business of teaching yoga. For example, how to create and lead a retreat, how to teach a beginner’s series, or how to teach a private session.

About the program.

You need to have graduated from a Yoga Teacher training to enroll in this program.

You will need to be interested in both the science and the art of teaching yoga.

  • We will cover alignment and anatomy in most trainings, and in order to receive the 500 hour certification, you will need to have taken “Yoga Teacher’s guide to and through the body.”

  • We will look extensively at “the invisibles,” the parts of the body that we often don’t think of as anatomy, but are essential to understanding how and why yoga affects people.

  • We will dive deeply into the things that most impact students: theming, sequencing, the subtle body, and presence.

Above all, you are curious and want to know why yoga works and how to make everything you teach a profound experience for your students.

You are looking for a learning community that shares knowledge, resources, and ideas and supports one another.

Is this training for you?

This Year’s Three Core Trainings

Module 1: Yoga Teacher’s Guide To and Through the Body, 40 hours.

This is a required training if you are seeking a 500-hour certification through Shine.

We will explore specific area of the body through two lenses, the physical and the energetic.

The physical lens will include attention to the anatomical and mechanical, in postures and in movement. We will also look at common injuries and how to support students with injuries or mechanical problems in the short and long term.

The energetic exploration will include traditional energetic maps, but will also examine creative sequencing, language, metaphor, image, music and other concepts.

Both the physical and energetic explorations will always be tied to building teaching skills and will end in tangible strategies you can use in both a group and private setting.

The training extends across the year, with eight Saturday trainings, from noon to 5pm on designated days. In each session we will look at a different region of the body.

Module 2: Rest and Retreat, 35 hours

We will look first at the central nervous system and vagus nerve to better understand how specifically to support rest and why it's essential for our well being.

We will embrace the concept of neuroplasticity and learn how to teach our students about neuroplasticity for better outcomes.

The three areas in yoga that trainees will learn comprehensively are restorative yoga (postures, parts of a class, propping, guided relaxation scripts), myofascial release techniques, the koshas and yoga nidra.

As part of the training, students will do a yoga nidra practice daily for a month to experience the effect of a regular rest practice in their own lives.

This training will also include restorative classes and the opportunity to practice restorative yoga at different times of the day to better understand how that affects students ability to rest.

Finally, trainees will learn how to plan a retreat and will experience a mini retreat as an example.

Module 3: Chronic Illness, Pain Management, and Private Sessions, 30 hours

We will look to better understand pain response by first looking at how the nervous system responds to pain and how yogic approaches can help students to manage that response.

We will also look at both the lymph system--what it is, how to help it work better, and why we need it to--and fascia.

We will explore best practices for autoimmune disorders, arthritis, migraines, and cancer.

We will look at how to bring these strategies into a class, but also how to develop a series for a chronic illness population and how to teach privates for people in pain and have medical considerations.

FAQs

Are these trainings online, in person, or hybrid?

All trainings are in person. They will include a virtual component as a resource, but they are all in person. In the future, we may add virtual only or hybrid trainings, but right now we are hungry for in person experiences and community.

How do I get started? Can I just register for the training?

Once you are accepted into the program, yes! Submit your application and email Sara a photo of your 200hour certificate. From there, you’ll get an acceptance letter. Once you are accepted, you can register for any trainings.

Can I do the training if I am not certified yet?

Most likely not. We cover so much that is a foundation for all of these courses that you would likely feel very behind.

Exceptions may be made if you aren’t interested in teaching, but want to learn more about a subject for yourself or a person you love who is suffering.

In these cases, you will need to do the self-paced non certification Yoga Teacher Training 200 hour program, which is available online prior to taking any advanced trainings.

I’m confused about the 500 hour designation.

Aren’t we all. This is a Yoga Alliance designation, indicating that you are an advanced teacher. It includes both your initial certification (200 hours), plus your advanced or post certification hours ( 300 hours), to equal 500 hours.

You will only need to do 300 hours through Shine to get the 500 hour designation.

What if I just want to do a few trainings and aren’t interested in the advanced certification?

That works! It took me 6 years to get my Yoga Medicine advanced certification and I started just because I was interested in their approach. Take as long as you want, once you’ve done the training you get credit and the hours don’t expire. And if you just want to take classes and not add up the hours that’s fine too.

So many Advanced Trainings are just all lecture, no application or supervised practice. Is that how Shine’s training is too?

Nope. Everything you learn includes application time. If we don’t do that, the majority of us will never use the knowledge we gain in a training.
